The Fibonacci Trick
If you do not have a calculator on hand during a run, you can use one of the most brilliant mathematical phenomena in nature: the Fibonacci sequence. The Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34...) is generated by adding the two previous numbers together. In an incredibly strange coincidence, consecutive Fibonacci numbers perfectly approximate the conversion from miles to kilometers.
For example, 5 miles is approximately 8 kilometers (actual: 8.04). 8 miles is approximately 13 kilometers (actual: 12.87). 13 miles is approximately 21 kilometers (the distance of a half marathon). If you need to convert in your head, just find the nearest Fibonacci number. To go from miles to km, go to the next number in the sequence. To go from km to miles, drop down to the previous number.
Why is a Marathon 26.2 Miles?
Most runners assume the marathon distance of 26.2 miles (exactly 42.195 kilometers) stems from ancient Greek history. While the original legend involves Pheidippides running from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, that distance was only about 25 miles (40 kilometers).
The bizarre 26.2-mile distance was actually established at the 1908 London Olympics. The British Royal Family demanded that the race start at Windsor Castle so the royal children could watch from their nursery, and finish exactly in front of the royal box at the Olympic stadium. That highly specific, politically motivated route measured exactly 26 miles and 385 yards (42.195 km). The distance stuck and became the unyielding international standard forever.
Pacing Psychology: Miles vs. Km
Running is intensely psychological. Many elite athletes and coaches recommend setting your GPS watch to kilometers instead of miles during long endurance efforts, specifically when executing a Couch to 5K plan or a marathon block.
Because a kilometer (0.62 miles) is significantly shorter than a mile, your watch will "beep" for a completed lap far more frequently. Breaking a grueling 20-mile run into 32 distinct kilometer chunks tricks the brain into feeling a continuous sense of momentum and accomplishment. The pace feedback loop is tighter, preventing you from zoning out and falling off your target pace during a long, unbroken mile.
Track Math Explained
Our calculator mathematically converts your distance into 400-meter track laps. A standard outdoor athletic track is exactly 400 meters in lane 1 (the innermost lane). To run one true mile on an outdoor track, you must run exactly 4 laps plus an extra 9.34 meters (usually marked by a specific starting line).
However, geometry dictates that the outer lanes cover more distance. If you are forced to run in Lane 8 for an entire lap, you are not running 400 meters—you are running 453 meters. Running 4 laps in Lane 8 means you ran 1.12 miles, drastically skewing your interval data.
