The Trap Bar Deadlift Mechanics
The introduction of the 3-Repetition Maximum Deadlift (MDL) revolutionized Army physical readiness testing. By utilizing the hexagonal trap bar instead of a straight Olympic barbell, the Army drastically reduced the barrier to entry while simultaneously mitigating the risk of lumbar spine injuries. The trap bar aligns the center of gravity directly beneath the lifter, rather than in front of the shins, transforming the movement from a pure hip-hinge into a hybrid movement that heavily recruits the quadriceps.
To max this event, you must utilize leg drive. Soldiers who attempt to pull the bar using purely their lower back will hit a mechanical wall long before reaching the 340-pound (male) or 210-pound (female) maximums. Brace your core, lock your lats, push the floor away with your feet, and ensure your hips and shoulders rise simultaneously. The SDC Leg Trap
The Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC) is the most metabolically devastating 90 seconds of the ACFT. It tests anaerobic capacity, muscular endurance, and sheer willpower. However, it is also a massive physiological trap. Soldiers frequently adrenaline-dump during the opening sprint and violently pull the 90-pound sled, immediately flooding their quadriceps and glutes with lactic acid.
This massive accumulation of hydrogen ions destroys muscular contractility. By the time you drop the 40-pound kettlebells after the carry, your legs will feel like concrete. Because the grueling 2-Mile Run follows shortly after the SDC (with only the Plank acting as an active-recovery bridge), destroying your legs on the sled drag will mathematically tank your run time. Pacing is mandatory. You must glide smoothly with the sled rather than violently jerking it. Maintain short, choppy steps, keeping your center of mass low. The Death of the Leg Tuck
The original iteration of the ACFT mandated the Leg Tuck as the definitive test of core strength. Soldiers were required to hang from a pull-up bar and bring their knees to their elbows. However, statistical analysis revealed a massive biomechanical bias: the Leg Tuck was measuring grip strength and upper-body pulling power far more than abdominal endurance. Soldiers with immensely strong cores but weaker lats or heavy lower bodies were failing at disproportionate rates.
The Army correctly identified this flaw and completely removed the Leg Tuck, replacing it with the standard forearm Plank. The Plank provides a pure, unadulterated measurement of anterior core endurance and isometric tension. To secure maximum points (3:40), you must practice total-body tension. Do not just rest on your elbows; actively squeeze your glutes, brace your transverse abdominis, and pull your elbows toward your toes to engage your lats. This will distribute the load across your entire fascial system rather than isolating your lower back.
Alternate Cardio Profiles
For Soldiers operating with permanent physical profiles that explicitly forbid the 2-Mile Run, the ACFT accommodates alternate aerobic events: the 12,000-meter Bike, the 5,000-meter Row, the 1,000-meter Swim, and the 2.5-Mile Walk. These events are not graded on a sliding point scale. They are strictly Go/No-Go.
If you elect an alternate cardio event, your maximum possible ACFT score is capped at 500 points (from the first five events). Completing the alternate cardio within the allotted time earns you a "GO", certifying your overall test passage. Failing the alternate event results in a "NO-GO" for the entire ACFT.
